Your Questions
Effective Staffing and Positioning is essential for service organizations to optimally execute their existing or new operating platforms and service models. The continual push to do more through initiatives such as new product offerings, new service models, and additional hours of operation puts a strain on the employee experience and can erode the customer experience. To staff and position given these competing demands, companies must answer the following key questions:
- Are we currently staffing for profitable growth from hour to hour?
- Have we defined the roles and accountabilities for employees and managers to ensure that the right people are working on the right things?
- What are the key drivers that determine the number and type of people that should be scheduled for each hour of the day for my business?
- How well are we forecasting drivers and using them to create optimal schedules?
- Do we have effective labor planning tools and processes to ensure stores get out ahead of staffing up or down appropriately to meet seasonal changes in demand?

Halverson group brings deep expertise to each Staffing and Positioning engagement in the areas of job design, enterprise modeling, predictive statistics, and retail analytics. This multidisciplinary lens helps us ensure that the end product is scientifically sound, user-friendly, and meets profitability, operational, and customer/employee experience targets.
Our Staffing and Positioning service areas include:
- Diagnosing Labor Productivity Opportunities. Our video analytic approach offers insights into how employees execute their day-to-day jobs and serve customers, including time utilization, resources to do the job, knowledge and skills to produce products and serve the customer to standards, and choices made to balance competing demands.
- Optimizing Staffing and Scheduling Systems. We work with clients to mine historical POS data or gather video analytic data to determine the key drivers of workload for the unit, conduct statistical analyses to optimize forecasting engines, and develop or enhance scheduling tools to schedule and position effectively based on these forecasts.
- Developing Labor Productivity Management Tools and Processes. We develop unit-level and corporate-level labor reporting tools and processes. At the unit level, the tools enable better labor decision making “on the floor”. At the regional or corporate level, the tools and reporting processes enable better productivity tracking to build accountability for results and increase diagnostic insights for improvement opportunities.
- Evaluating Innovations. As with all of our services, we help our clients ensure that the staffing and positioning “improvements” they make are having the desired impact. We conduct detailed pre-post analyses of new or enhanced staffing and positioning solutions. Our assessment approach will ensure that the solutions are driving positive outcomes in decision making, employee behaviors, and financial results.
